The Basis of our Faith

Our life together is founded on Jesus, the Christ and son of God. We recognize the Bible’s authority over all aspects of our belief and life, and we affirm the rule of faith stated in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. We are particularly influenced and inspired by the New Testament’s Acts 2 and 4 and the Sermon on the Mount, which direct us to embrace communal living and lifelong service to others. We desire to remain true to this calling all our lives.

Founded in 1920 in Germany, the Bruderhof (“place of brothers” in German) has its roots in the Anabaptist tradition of Europe’s Radical Reformation. We practice adult baptism. We are also pacifists and conscientious objectors. While we love our countries and countrymen, our faith transcends political and nationalistic affiliations.

Other religious movements stemming from the Anabaptist tradition include the Mennonites and Amish. We, however, are most similar to and inspired by the sixteenth-century Hutterites, who shared a community of goods and sought to live in brotherly and sisterly love.

The Bruderhof does not want a religion that seeks the future of humanity only beyond this earthly life, thus satisfying people with mere spirituality. Humankind needs help here and now. By following Jesus’ practical commands, we feel we are doing what we can to advance God’s kingdom here on earth.

Some of Our Guiding Biblical Texts:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need. ”

“Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet; and distribution was made to each as any had need.”

“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ”

“Faith expressly signifies the deep, strong, blessed restlessness that drives the believer forward so that he cannot settle down… A believer cannot sit still as one sits with a pilgrim’s staff in one’s hand. A believer travels forward.”
